The uniqueness Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni is building similar Indian temple with bright colors. Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni which adopted the Indo-Mughal architecture was built in 2001. The originator was Pastor James Barathaputra, SJ.  He was a Jesuit priest from India who serves in Indonesia since more than 40 years ago. Annai means Mother. While Velangkanni (Vailankanni) is a village in Tamil Nadu, India. In the 17th century, the Virgin Mary appeared to some children in Velangkanni. Velangkanni in India is now known as the Lourdes of the East. Well, Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni built in Medan is dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Healer (Our Lady of Good Health) or  Annai Velangkanni.


Having built up over four years of age on October 1, 2005, Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni was inaugurated by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra Province Dr. Rudolf Pardede and Medan Archbishop Mgr AG Pius Datubara OFMCap. It was a dream come true and also a miracle that Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni can be completed. There is no fixed financial backers, no professional contractors, also no professional artist. Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni built by the hands of amateurs and rely on funding from donors. A project that does not make human logic. However, the inclusion of God was manifest in the construction of Graha Maria Annai this Velangkanni. Development costs reached 4 billion, 60% of which is met from donations.
Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni not merely accentuate the beauty of the architecture and reliefs with bright colors. But the whole building Annai Velangkanni story of God's Work Safety as outlined in symbols and images that exist.
